I don't know if this topic is currently taboo to discuss, but I would love to discuss it with you guys.
For those who don't know, here's a link to the Kickstarter page.
Let me try to fill you in:
Birth Of Man was a kickstarter funded feature length fan film of the game minecraft, and it was created by youtuber Brandon Laastch (We all know who the dude is). It garnered some attention from some sites, and generally got a mixed response by commenters. Particularly a ton of hate from the IGN crowd, which albeit, they have always had a affinity for hating just about everything. It was going along great, reaching above 1k backers and $63,980 out of the goal $600,000. But then it was cancelled, and shortly Markus Persson (Minecraft creator AKA Notch) tweeted "We don't allow half a million kickstarters based on our ip without any deals in place. :/". Obviously, Brandon was banking on creative commons to kick in, and didn't think he had to speak to Notch. Which is a major goof on his part, considering the magnitude of the films budget. Brandon has yet to make a official statement. But everyone is hoping they're working out a deal.
My Opinion: Judging by the trailer, the film looked dazzling. Which shouldn't be that much of a surprise, but Brandon & Co. (I have no idea if RocketJump/Freddie is affiliated) really captured some beautiful shots. But one of my main concerns is the story. I could understand a short 30 minute minecraft film, but a feature length film seems incredibly boring story wise. If Birth of Man makes it, I really hope that the story can actually sustain itself fully, and doesn't turn into a hour and half of visual porn. So for now, I cross my fingers and wait for an official statement from Brandon. It looks very promising!
